The 2017 Snow Crush Fat Tire Race
It was a pleasant twenty degrees outside when close to 100 riders approached the starting line for the 2017 Snow Crush Fat Tire bike race on January 14th. The starting gun went off and the second annual race was underway at the River Bend Nature Center.
Fat tire bike racing has become a popular sport across the Midwest in recent years. On that sunny Saturday afternoon, riders from all over came together in Faribault, MN to compete in a 15 mile, fun and excited snow packed race.
The sponsors of the race, F-Town Brewing Company, partnered with Cannon River Offroad Cycling & Trails, and Milltown – Premium Adventure Goods to put on the race. Volunteers from the Faribault community helped the race go smoothly by doing everything from setting up the course to organizing registrations.
Todd Trembly with Milltown – Premium Adventure Goods explains that the course itself was a “non-technical trail” with uphill sections that challenged the racers. In the end, though, this year’s Snow Crush was a great race and a great time.
Following the conclusion of the race, everyone took their fat tire bikes to the F-Town Brewing Company for an award ceremony and celebration. Competitors and volunteers enjoyed the rest of the day listening to live music by Switch and indulging in hot food and cold drinks.
If you’re interested in hopping on a fat tire bike yourself, you can stop in to Milltown – Premium Adventure Goods to rent or purchase your very own bike. Trembly explains that even though these bikes are durable enough to be ridden across any type of terrain, the Faribault River Bend Nature Center includes trails for anyone to enjoy. You can also sign up for group rides around the town on Tuesday nights.
Just because there’s snow on the ground doesn’t mean you have to hang up your bike for the winter. Just get yourself some fat tires, a helmet, and a warm coat to start your training for next year’s Snow Crush race!
