SUMMARY:“They were Related Somehow!” Proofing Family Stories to Connect with Gary Heyn
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rice County Historical Society and Gary Heyn on a journey of immigration history and the connections between communities across the sea. Learn about family\, acquaintances\, and neighbors who traveled from Gembitz Hauland Posen to\nHoney Creek Township in Sauk County\, Wisconsin and Deerfield Township in Steele County\, Minnesota in this talk about genealogy and the stories that connect us. \nGary Heyn\, a graduate of the University of Minnesota\, worked as an executive at Tolomatic\, a manufacturing company in Minneapolis until his retirement. He now devotes himself to genealogical research with a specific focus on the former Prussian province of Posen. Raised on a family farm near Rochester\, Minnesota he has published several articles and give numerous lectures on the history of the German farm families who emigrated from Posen to Southeastern Minnesota. \nHis book\, “Standing at the Grave: A Family’s Journey from the Grand Duchy of Posen to the Prairies of North Dakota\, was published in 2023. A German edition of the book titled\, “Das Grab in der Ferne: Von der Provinz Posen in die Neue Welt\,” has been released this year. Heyn lives with his wife in Golden Valley\, Minnesota. He currently serves as treasurer for both the Germanic Genealogical Society (GGS) and the International German Genealogical Partnership (IGGP). \nThis event is part of our Thursday night speaker series and is free for members and $5 for nonmembers. His professional career has spanned public education and management in Minnesota\, including teaching classes on the 1960s for the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium\, serving as an adjunct instructor at MSU Mankato\, and teaching with the Celtic Junction Art Center. The Metis are a people native to Canada whose origins are marked by the mixing of European\, notably French\, and Indigenous Peoples. The Metis people often served as translators and traders during the Fur Trade. Learn about the Metis in Minnesota and their importance throughout Minnesota history. \nCorinne L. Monjeau-Marz is an independent historian\, researcher\, and author and makes her home in Cottage Grove\, Minnesota. The focus of her study and traveling is related to the Early Explorers & Indigenous Contact\, the Early Portage& Fur Trade Routes\, and the 1862 US-Dakota War. For over sixty years she has been collecting antique images and documents now used in her writing projects\, programs offered\, and in her business\, Minnesota Territory (books and images). She is Minnesota-born and is a descendant of French-Canadian\, English\, German immigrants\, and Minnesota’s Mdewakanton Dakota\, Northern Minnesota Ojibwe\, and Wisconsin Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) People. \nProgram is free for members\, $5 for non-members.
